Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, announced the delay of the company’s IPO from 2026 to 2027, calling a listing this year “ill-advised” and citing safety and alignment concerns. He stated that even an approximately 10% chance of AI causing human extinction by the end of the decade should be treated as intolerable. The company is reportedly seeking around $30 billion in a private funding round at a valuation of approximately $1.4 trillion, up from roughly $852 billion in March 2026. Altman identified two unacceptable outcomes: humans losing control over AI systems and extreme concentration of power in the hands of a few entities. OpenAI had previously filed confidentially for an IPO before this retreat from the process.
