Rosatom is in preliminary discussions with the United States about joint data center projects based on small modular reactors and microreactors. The disclosure was made by Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, on October 16, 2026, during Russian Energy Week, with no partners, locations, financing structures or timelines yet specified. US sanctions and restrictions on payments remain major obstacles, so the initiative is still exploratory and has not resulted in a contract. Rosatom is also working with MEPhI university on ultra-small reactors producing between 5 and 50 megawatts of electricity and aims to capture 15% to 20% of the global small modular reactor market by 2030.
