Romanian military divers carried out controlled detonations of two Russian-designed Gerbera sea drones on August 11, 2026, near the Neptun Deep offshore gas project in the Black Sea. The drones were spotted by a civilian vessel working on the project located roughly 90 nautical miles east of Constanta, well inside Romania’s exclusive economic zone. Romania’s Defence Minister Radu Miruta publicly confirmed the controlled detonations, while Ukraine’s verification that the drones were not its own effectively points to Russia as the likely source. Neptun Deep, jointly developed by OMV Petrom and state-owned Romgaz, is projected to become the European Union’s largest offshore gas development when production comes online in 2027.
