Roche and Recursion Pharmaceuticals have advanced their first AI-identified drug target, a neuroscience candidate for an undisclosed neurodegenerative disease. This milestone, announced on August 5, 2026, marks the first validated output from a collaboration launched in December 2021 when Genentech paid Recursion $150 million upfront. Recursion’s AI platform, Recursion OS, identified this target by analyzing large-scale datasets from cellular imaging and genetic perturbation experiments, including a microglial map built from approximately 46 million images. The partnership has a total potential value of up to $12 billion and covers up to 40 programs, primarily in neuroscience with oncology as a secondary focus.
