Quantum-proof Bitcoin signatures would clog network nodes with 10x larger data

Coinbase urges the Bitcoin industry to prepare for quantum computing. The draft SHRINCS signature scheme combines compact stateful signatures of 548 to 4,619 bytes with a stateless fallback of 5,777 bytes, required when restoring from a static backup or when a signing server fails. This fallback generates higher transaction fees: 15,450 satoshis versus 2,370 satoshis for the smallest stateful signature, according to a hypothetical model at 10 satoshis per virtual byte. Coinbase, which holds approximately 12% of BTC in circulation, notes that stateful signing requires exclusive access to the key and its state during generation, complicating independent signing server operation. The document does not specify whether these costs will be absorbed by the platform or passed on to customers.
