Experts are warning about the threat that quantum computers pose to Bitcoin’s cryptography. According to Glassnode’s May analysis, 6.04 million BTC, representing 30.2% of total supply at the time, held already-exposed public keys. A hypothetical scenario demonstrates that a quantum attacker could transfer 2.5 million BTC across 10 blocks, approximately 100 minutes, due to the network’s limited block capacity. Researcher Jameson Lopp estimates that approximately 2.6 million exposed BTC might be unable to migrate. Proposals such as BIP-360 and BIP-361 offer protections, but owners unable to migrate or prove their property risk permanently losing access to their funds.
