At a White House event on Wednesday, Donald Trump is expected to present his administration’s crackdown on international criminal networks that lure Americans into fake cryptocurrency investments. In 2025, Americans filed more than one million internet scam complaints with the FBI, up 17% from a year earlier, and crypto fraud accounted for more than half of the reported losses. The FBI recorded 181,565 crypto-related complaints and $11.366 billion in losses, including $7.2 billion from investment scams, while victims aged 60 and older lost $4.43 billion. The agency attributes much of the activity to criminal organizations in Southeast Asia, notably Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar, that use trafficking victims in scam compounds. The FBI’s Operation Level Up notified 3,780 victims and saved an estimated $225.8 million in 2025, while North Korea-linked hackers stole $2 billion.
