Premier League announces sweeping rule changes for 2026/27 season

The Premier League announced on June 12 a package of rule changes for the 2026/27 season, starting August 21. The changes include a five-second countdown for throw-ins and goal kicks, with possession turning over if the clock expires. Injured players must now leave the pitch for at least one minute before returning, up from 30 seconds previously. VAR will have expanded powers to review clearly incorrect second yellow cards. Holding offenses during set pieces and goalkeeper challenges on crosses will also be more strictly penalized.
