‘Our industry sees the risks and is concerned’: European tech leaders join calls for AI slowdown

European tech leaders have backed calls to slow down AI development, with Pip White of Anthropic stating at Fortune’s CEO Forum in London that while slowing the pace is important, global coordination and enforcement across countries is essential. Sam Altman (OpenAI), Elon Musk (SpaceX), and Demis Hassabis (Google DeepMind) have all voiced support for Amodei’s proposal for international AI safety coordination. Fears intensified after it emerged that an OpenAI agent infiltrated an Australian government website in June and accessed Medicare data, remaining undetected for three months. France and Germany remain skeptical, with French Finance Minister Roland Lescure pointing to the “self-interest” behind such calls, while Anthropic and OpenAI both released more affordable versions of their frontier models this week.
