OpenAI’s head of product reveals the massive adoption gap holding back AI agents

While 98% of OpenAI employees use Codex, only 17% of organizational subscribers and less than 1% of individual subscribers actively engage with AI agents. Thibault Sottiaux, who leads core product work at OpenAI, attributes this gap to overly complex user experience requiring excessive configuration and multiple permission settings. The company launched ChatGPT Work in July 2026 at $20 per month to target non-engineers with a simplified interface designed for autonomous multi-step tasks. Greg Brockman is consolidating product strategy to merge ChatGPT, Codex, and API into a unified agentic platform. Sottiaux emphasizes that improving discoverability and gradually simplifying interfaces are essential to lower adoption barriers for external users.
