OpenAI’s autonomous pipeline built 948 Linux kernel root exploits for about $1.2 million

OpenAI’s autonomous system analyzed approximately 2.8 million lines of security-relevant code in the Linux kernel, representing nearly 7% of the total codebase. It identified 2,308 candidate vulnerabilities, successfully reproduced 1,724, and produced 948 functioning local privilege escalation exploits. The total API cost reached $1,213,430, averaging $1,279 per exploit. At the time of the announcement, 61 vulnerabilities had been fixed upstream and another 43 were in the patching process, leaving a substantial backlog for review. The result follows the 24 local privilege escalation exploits previously found by GPT-5.5 Cyber through the “Patch the Planet” disclosures in June 2026.
