OpenAI says ChatGPT now handles a query volume equivalent to roughly one-fifth of Google’s, a share that is growing rapidly. The estimate is based on approximately 2.5 billion daily prompts in mid-2025, although other estimates of search-equivalent activity range from 7.5% to 12% depending on the methodology. About 20.1% of messages sent to ChatGPT from July through September 2026 sought information, while others were used for writing, coding, brainstorming or conversation. Google nevertheless retains a massive advantage in referrals, sending websites about 190 times more traffic than ChatGPT, whose click-through rate remains below 1%.
