OpenAI has deployed Images 2.6 worldwide on ChatGPT and Codex for every subscription tier, from free to paid plans, across web, desktop, and mobile. The model now creates animated GIFs in a single step from a text prompt or an uploaded photo, with playback-speed controls and the ability to edit individual frames. Two developer APIs are available: GPT-Image-2.6 Flare, optimized for speed, and GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst, focused on output quality. Weekly image generation volume has surpassed 4 billion, compared with 3 billion in September 2026, while the gradual rollout began on November 4, 2026.
