OpenAI, led by CEO Sam Altman, announced on May 31, 2026 a major push into humanoid robotics with a two-phase strategy. The company first plans to deploy versatile robots to assist skilled workers in infrastructure and construction, before moving to personal consumer models. OpenAI relaunched its robotics division in February 2025, after shutting it down between 2020 and 2021, and now operates a lab in San Francisco with a second facility planned in Richmond, California. Altman targets robots capable of useful real-world tasks by 2027. OpenAI faces growing competition, notably from Tesla’s Optimus project, while holding investment stakes in startups Figure and 1X.
