OpenAI has launched Astra, a new AI model capable of solving longstanding open math problems for a compute cost of roughly $2,000. On September 1, 2026, Astra became the first model to meet the Critical cybersecurity capability threshold, able to autonomously discover and exploit previously unknown vulnerabilities. The model represents a significant leap beyond the GPT-5.6 family, positioning OpenAI on track to achieve AGI by the end of 2026 according to Sam Altman. A case study conducted with Playco showed a 50% reduction in manual fixes when using Astra for game prototyping.
