The solution was generated by approximately 10,000 autonomous AI agents working in coordination over 88 hours at an estimated cost of $15 million, followed by a 17-hour formal verification using the Lean proof assistant. A dispute has emerged with NYU mathematician Tristan Buckmaster and Anthropic researcher Levent Alpöge, who had been working on related fluid dynamics problems and published their own findings one day before OpenAI’s announcement. The researchers have raised concerns that OpenAI’s AI systems may have inadvertently accessed their unpublished work stored on the Codex platform, which OpenAI firmly denies. The proof has not yet been published in a peer-reviewed journal, and the mathematical community remains cautious, as the Institute has never awarded a prize in less than several years of evaluation.
