OpenAI is rolling out a ChatGPT feature that turns a text prompt or an uploaded photo into an animated GIF, with controls for playback speed and individual frames. The feature is being released alongside the Images 2.6 model, which is also expected to support 4K resolution and edits indicated through annotations on an image. The Images API code supports animations with 2 to 16 frames, with a default of 9 frames displayed for 200 milliseconds each. Frame-level editing lets users correct one image without regenerating the entire animation, but the developer-facing capability remains behind a disabled feature flag and has not yet been publicly documented in the API. Content creators and social media managers can use these GIFs to produce short visuals quickly, although the format is not intended to replace video-generation tools.
