The iPhone 4S through the X generation are not recommended for storing a cryptocurrency recovery phrase because they contain critical vulnerabilities that can no longer be patched. These models are exposed to the checkm8 BootROM vulnerability, which has existed since 2019, while the XS through second-generation SE models have also been affected since June by the usbliter8 exploit targeting A12 and A13 chips. According to OneKey founder Wang Yishi, these flaws do not directly grant access to a recovery phrase, but they can facilitate other attacks, particularly when the passcode is weak or the operating system has a known vulnerability. The OneKey founder recommends using an iPhone 12 or newer, as Apple could still patch any future BootROM exploit through a software update. A dedicated hardware wallet, such as Tangem, is also presented as an alternative for storing a recovery phrase.
