Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang responded to Pope Leo XIV’s criticism regarding AI safety and regulation, stating that the questions raised by the pontiff were necessary and important. The pope had said during a September press conference that concerns about AI destroying the world are not “fake news” and should be taken seriously, in apparent rebuke of President Donald Trump, who had told the UN General Assembly that fears about AI’s dangers were a “hoax.” The pope also directly criticized Huang, expressing skepticism about Nvidia’s AI guardrails announcement, arguing that the CEO has advocated for no limits and no government regulation. Huang defended Nvidia’s record, citing its open-source safety technology, work on quality improvement frameworks, and efforts in audit and governance. He emphasized common ground with the pope, stating: “We all care about the same thing, which is an optimistic future where this technology has great positive impact in society while doing it with great responsibility, safety, and accountability.”
