Nvidia Bets on Old Buildings as Data Center Backlash Grows

Nvidia is deploying DSX POD, a modular artificial intelligence infrastructure system designed for installation in existing buildings, including aged industrial sites and decommissioned telephone exchange facilities. According to vice president Charlie Boyle, these pre-integrated modules could reduce deployment time from about six months to 14 days while also minimizing water consumption. The strategy responds to growing local opposition to new data centers, which has stalled numerous projects over concerns about electricity use, water consumption and land disruption. Voters in at least ten US states approved measures restricting or banning some new construction on November 4 and 5, 2026, while reusing existing industrial sites could cut retrofit capital costs by 30 to 50 %. However, modern artificial intelligence racks require between 40 and more than 200 kW of power, compared with 8 to 12 kW for legacy racks, requiring electrical upgrades that could erode the expected savings.
