Mistral AI builds strong ties with Macron ahead of election, raising questions about Europe’s AI future

Mistral AI, the French artificial intelligence startup founded in April 2023, has raised approximately 6 billion euros in equity, including a 3 billion euro Series D round in September 2026 led by Samsung, pushing its valuation above 21 billion euros. CEO and co-founder Arthur Mensch has enjoyed privileged access to the Elysée Palace, where Macron personally promoted Mistral’s products including the Le Chat AI assistant and facilitated partnerships with tech giants such as Nvidia. The company has also secured contracts with French government agencies, including those handling military and nuclear operations. With ambitions to achieve 200 megawatts of data center capacity across Europe by the end of 2027, Mistral represents Europe’s push for technological sovereignty against US and Chinese dominance. However, the end of Macron’s presidential term in 2027 raises questions about the durability of these political ties.
