Microsoft bets on AI agents and hybrid intelligence to reshape Windows 11

Microsoft announced at a Windows and Surface event in San Francisco on October 7, 2026 its plan to turn Windows 11 into an agentic operating system where AI agents act on behalf of users by combining local and cloud models through an approach called hybrid intelligence. The company highlighted MAI Code 1.1 Flash as an example of an optimized model with 137 billion parameters but only 6.8 billion active at any given time. Microsoft Execution Containers (MXC), now generally available on Windows 11, allows IT departments to run agents in sandboxed environments to limit potential damage from errors. Surface Laptop Ultra devices and other products powered by NVIDIA RTX Spark are available for pre-order.
