Meta has filed a judicial review in the High Court to challenge Ofcom’s fee structure under the UK’s Online Safety Act. The company argues that using global revenue rather than UK-specific earnings to calculate regulatory fees creates an unfair and disproportionate burden on large multinational tech firms. This formula could expose Meta to fines reaching 10% of its worldwide revenue, which totaled approximately $201 billion in the prior fiscal year. The preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 7, 2026, with the substantive hearing set for October 2026. Other platforms, including WhatsApp, Instagram, Roblox, and Quora, are also contesting their Category 1 designations under the Act.
