Meta announced on September 21 the Petal subsea cable, roughly 4,300 miles long, connecting the U.S. and France and expected to enter service in 2029. The cable will carry 1 petabit per second, about 125,000 gigabytes per second, double the capacity of today’s most advanced transoceanic cables, enough for three-quarters of the world’s population to stream music simultaneously. Meta has invested in more than 20 subsea cable projects touching six continents except Antarctica, with its most ambitious project, Waterworth, announced in February 2025, stretching over 31,000 miles and connecting the U.S., Brazil, South Africa, India, and other regions across five continents. The company, valued at roughly $1.85 trillion, expects capital expenditures of $130 billion to $145 billion this year, nearly double the $72.2 billion spent in 2024.
