Meta faces ‘astronomical’ consequences as legal fight reaches critical moment in California

Opening arguments begin Tuesday in Oakland federal courthouse in a trial co-led by California Attorney General Rob Bonta against Meta as part of a coalition of 29 state attorneys general. The allegations center on Meta’s alleged fostering of addictive behavior in teens and children through Facebook and Instagram. Last month, Meta lost a case in New Mexico and was ordered to pay nearly $1 billion ($567 million into an abatement fund plus $375 million for violating the state’s unfair practices act). Meta’s attorneys have said damages could reach $1.4 trillion, while lawyers representing the states said $200 billion is more likely, with industry experts calling it social media’s « Big Tobacco » moment. Meta disputes the allegations and plans to appeal.
