According to Bob Sternfels, CEO of McKinsey & Company, the firm now employs about 40,000 people and uses between 20,000 and 25,000 AI agents, for a combined workforce of roughly 60,000. The number of agents has risen sharply from just a few thousand about 18 months ago, and the company aims to pair every employee with at least one AI agent over the next 18 months. In 2025, the agents saved 1.5 million hours on routine research and synthesis tasks and produced 2.5 million charts in six months. Client-facing consulting roles grew by about 25%, while back-office positions declined by a similar proportion. McKinsey is gradually moving away from fee-for-service arrangements toward outcomes-based engagements, with AI-related projects accounting for about 40% of its business and QuantumBlack leading the effort with 1,700 professionals.
