Mastercard, Borderless test shared identity checks for stablecoin transfers

Mastercard and Borderless have launched a pilot to explore how Mastercard’s Crypto Credential framework can bring greater trust to cross-border stablecoin payments. The project aims to test governance signals that can reduce compliance-related friction, one of the biggest obstacles to stablecoin adoption according to Kevin Lehtiniitty, CEO of Borderless. Mastercard’s framework will act as a verification and governance layer without processing or settling funds. This initiative follows Mastercard’s acquisition of BVNK, completed on Monday for $1.8 billion, and plans announced in June to expand settlement capabilities to include stablecoins such as USDC, PYUSD, USDG, USDP, RLUSD and SoFiUSD.
