Argentine legend Marcelo Gallardo was appointed as Ecuador’s national team head coach on September 4, after roughly a month of negotiations, signing a four-year deal running through the 2030 World Cup. The contract is reportedly worth over $3M annually, with a total coaching package including staff projected at around $5M. The 49-year-old leaves club management after winning 14 titles during eight seasons at River Plate, establishing the Buenos Aires club as South America’s dominant force. His debut on the Ecuador bench is expected on September 24 against South Korea in a friendly, followed by the Copa Kirin tournament in Japan in early October. The long-term goal is to make Ecuador genuine World Cup contenders heading into the 2030 tournament co-hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.
