Lightning Labs launched l402.tech on July 29, a standalone website for the L402 protocol enabling AI agents to pay for services in bitcoin without accounts or intermediaries. The protocol combines payment and authentication in a single flow where an agent receives a Lightning invoice, pays it, and gets cryptographic proof of access in under a second with fees as low as 1 satoshi. L402 builds on the HTTP 402 status code using the Lightning Network as its underlying payment infrastructure, which has been live since 2018. Core tools include Aperture, the lnget client, and the Wavelength wallet toolkit launched on July 21. L402 competes with x402, which uses stablecoins instead of bitcoin, by leveraging sub-second settlement and near-zero fees.
