Foundations co-founded by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jeff Bezos have jointly launched the Phoenix Species Project, a 200 million dollar fund aimed at saving 100 of the most threatened species on the planet. This initiative, described as the largest fund ever created exclusively for the recovery of critically endangered species, includes lemurs, salamanders, pangolins and echidnas. The project followed a 2021 meeting between DiCaprio, the Amazon founder and his wife Lauren Sanchez Bezos, during which they discussed strategies with local governments, environmental groups and Indigenous peoples. Among the targeted species are the golden-crowned sifaka from Madagascar, the Visayan warty pig from the Philippines and Attenborough’s long-beaked echidna from New Guinea.
