Japanese Bitcoin Industry Co., Ltd. has launched Aurora, a self-custodial Bitcoin payments platform, at the Bitcoin Asia conference in Hong Kong. The solution aims to enable Japanese companies to sell their content (anime, manga, games) to international fans often unable to use traditional payment systems. The Japanese anime market outside Japan reached ¥2.17 trillion in 2024, up 26% year-over-year. Each merchant runs its own Lightning node and receives Bitcoin payments directly from customers, while JBI handles technical maintenance, liquidity, accounting and fiat conversion. The model is designed to provide businesses with clearer regulatory standing, as JBI does not act as a custodian.
