Japan’s Financial Services Agency is considering raising the 10% proprietary trading volume cap imposed on PTS platforms, driven by surging activity in AI and semiconductor stocks. The Japanese government has allocated approximately 10 trillion yen (about $67 billion) in subsidies to boost its technology sector, particularly chipmakers and AI companies. The current cap limits any single PTS to no more than 10% of total trading volume in a given security. No specific new percentage or timeline has been announced yet. Loosening this limit would allow alternative trading venues to compete more effectively with the Tokyo Stock Exchange and could tighten bid-ask spreads for institutional investors.
