Coinbase, which claims custody of approximately 5% of all Bitcoin in circulation, is urging developers to begin preparing now for the quantum computing threat. The company warns that Bitcoin consensus changes and ecosystem migrations can take years, and that waiting until a cryptographically relevant quantum computer capable of breaking Bitcoin’s signatures is announced would leave too little time to respond. The exchange recommends supporting a flexible container design like BIP-360, a staged 1-of-2 construction allowing spending with either a classical or quantum-safe key, and compatibility with the multi-party computation key-splitting technique custodians rely on. Coinbase formed a quantum advisory board in January and joined the Bitcoin Security Consortium in July alongside BlackRock and Strategy, pledging a combined 15 million dollars toward quantum-proofing Bitcoin.
