Ireland: The new tax-free investment account closes its doors to crypto

The Irish government has unveiled a plan to simplify savings taxation with a personal investment account exempt from tax below a certain threshold, available to residents aged 18 and over starting in 2027. Cryptocurrencies are explicitly excluded from this scheme, classified as « highly complex and risky products » despite major platforms like Ripple and Kraken being established in Ireland. Service providers will calculate and remit taxes themselves, eliminating the disposal presumption rule that taxed certain funds every eight years. The exact thresholds will be set in the October 2027 Budget, with legislation to be finalized via the Finance Bill 2026.
