The U.S. Department of Justice has charged 17 Iranians for a state-sponsored cyber attack campaign, including an attempt to extort $6 million in bitcoin from HBO. These hackers worked for the Mabna Institute, founded around 2013 and acting on behalf of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Hundreds of U.S. and international universities, dozens of companies, and at least five federal and state government agencies were targeted. The stolen research, which U.S. institutions had acquired at a cost of $3.4 billion, was resold through Megapaper.ir and Gigapaper.ir. The Rewards for Justice program is now offering up to $10 million for information leading to the suspects’ arrest.
