IOTA’s Starfish consensus engine is now live on the mainnet, replacing the previous Mysticeti engine with a Byzantine fault-tolerant consensus model based on a directed acyclic graph. This protocol, deployed via version 24 in release v1.21.1 around April 23, 2026, has reduced outbound recovery requests by approximately 10 times compared to Mysticeti, while significantly lowering tail latency and variance under adverse network conditions. The mechanism relies on three key elements: cordial dissemination, Reed-Solomon encoding, and Data Availability Certificates. This upgrade primarily targets the TWIN (Trade Worldwide Information Network), focused on tokenizing essential trade documents such as certificates of origin and bills of lading in the global trade sector.
