The Institute of Foundation Models at Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence in Abu Dhabi has launched K2 Horizon, a family of six open-source AI models ranging from 0.9 billion to 375 billion parameters. The UAE-backed research lab is betting on full transparency in training processes to compete with proprietary players. K2-V2, released in December 2025, achieved the top score on the Artificial Analysis Openness Index, confirming the full publication of weights, training data, and methods under permissive licenses. The university has established partnerships with G42 and Cerebras to optimize inference performance. These models enable companies to develop commercial products without the restrictions imposed by some nominally « open » releases.
