IMF warns AI could disrupt 40% of jobs, keeps growth near 3%

The IMF projects that artificial intelligence could affect about 40% of global jobs through augmentation, downgrading, or elimination, a figure reaching 60% in advanced economies. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva stated at the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok that massive investments in AI infrastructure are supporting global growth around 3% in 2026, with Asian economies and the United States, China, and India as the primary beneficiaries. The United States now has approximately 10% of jobs requiring AI skills, typically with higher wages, while routine jobs are declining. Georgieva framed this labor market transformation as a slow-moving tsunami, highlighting implications for education, taxation, and public finance. Advanced economies, with 60% of jobs potentially affected, face the sharpest near-term adjustment, while lower-income nations at 23% to 26% risk being left further behind.
