How U.S. know-how is fracking Australia into a gas boom, from Texas oilmen to Trump’s energy secretary

The first commercial natural gas deliveries from Australia’s Beetaloo Basin in the Northern Territory began in September, culminating nearly two decades of efforts to replicate U.S. shale expertise down under. The arrival of Texas oilmen like Bryan Sheffield and Dick Stoneburner proved critical: they provided capital, recruited American service companies including Helmerich & Payne, Baker Hughes, and Liberty Energy, and introduced horizontal drilling and slickwater fracking techniques suited to Australian rock. Production currently reaches 40 million cubic feet per day, with a target of 100 million by 2028. Facing depleting offshore fields and potential gas shortfalls, Australia is counting on this onshore basin to secure domestic supply and LNG exports. Tamboran Resources and Daly Waters Energy, still unprofitable with going concern warnings, are now seeking a strategic partner to continue scaling the project.
