XRP Ledger: A 10-Year-Old Flaw Could Have Created Infinite XRP

A critical flaw present since 2015 in the XRP Ledger allowed the creation of XRP from nothing. Discovered on September 22 by researcher Cayden Liao and company Veria AI as part of a bug bounty program, it was fixed urgently on September 25. The issue stemmed from a calculation error: when the total amount of multiple purchases exceeded a threshold, the counter reset to zero, allowing buyers to receive the full XRP without paying the actual price. This vulnerability threatened the fixed cap of 100 billion XRP created at the network’s launch in 2012. No exploitation has been observed, according to the developers.
