Greece’s parliament passed a law imposing a 10% tax on annual net cryptocurrency gains exceeding €500. The measure will apply from January 1, 2027, and will cover the entire gain above the threshold rather than only the amount exceeding €500. Income from staking, crypto lending and liquidity provision in decentralized finance will be classified as interest income and taxed at 15%. The wording could nevertheless make some crypto-to-crypto swaps taxable despite the government’s stated intention to exempt them. Investors will also have a 12-month window to voluntarily declare previously unreported crypto income without late-filing penalties, provided they meet the conditions and pay within 60 days of filing.
