OpenAI launched GPT-6 Astra in September 2026, the first AI model to surpass human performance on each of the five drone navigation subtasks, namely 3D mapping, self-localization, route planning, person detection, and motion tracking. However, the end-to-end success rate of the full sequence is only 2.8% according to tests conducted by Andon Labs with the Drone-Bench benchmark on a standard consumer drone. Astra handles the entire process autonomously but fails more than 97% of the time when it comes to chaining all steps without error. OpenAI positions this model for professional computer use and embodied AI, beyond screen-based tasks.
