Google has been fined 403 million euros by Ireland’s Data Protection Commission for breaching the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation. The six-year investigation found that Google did not lawfully or transparently process users’ location data across several services, including Web & App Activity, Location History, and the Location Accuracy feature in Android. Ireland serves as Google’s main EU regulator due to the company’s European headquarters in Dublin. This fine ranks as the fourth largest privacy penalty issued by the Irish watchdog, which has previously fined TikTok and Meta. Google stated it has significantly strengthened its practices and tools for managing location data since 2019.
