Google DeepMind says its AI models, working under human direction, have identified two vulnerabilities in RSA encryption using 1024-bit keys. The first enables the forgery of digital signatures, while the second is a less expensive algorithm for batch factoring related moduli. Led by Dj Dvijotham and Abhradeep Thakurta, with the collaboration of Nadia Heninger and Emmanuel Thomé, the research shows that AI agents can accelerate the exploration of mathematical assumptions underlying cryptographic algorithms. Current deployments using 2048-bit or larger keys are not affected by this specific threat.
