GitHub announced on September 4, 2026 Project HydraFusion, a dynamic routing system for coding tasks across multiple AI models, available as a research preview in GitHub Copilot. The system uses three execution patterns: Single for routing to a single model, Cascade for chaining multiple models, and Critique for isolated output evaluation. On the TerminalBench 2.1 benchmark, HydraFusion outperforms Claude Opus 5 by 4.9 quality points while reducing costs by 67%. The system was tested across three recognized benchmarks (TerminalBench 2.1, DeepSWE, and CheckpointBench), demonstrating cost savings ranging from 36% to 65% depending on the case. Currently in research preview with limited access, GitHub is seeking developer feedback before any broader rollout.
