German Ledger reseller pauses sales following $86M draining incident

Official European Ledger reseller MediaMarkt has removed all of the manufacturer’s products from its stores and online platforms after reports that some devices may have been fitted with physical spyware, leading to an $86 million draining incident. Former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpelès has been helping identify the spyware in tampered Ledger wallets sold by multiple resellers, including MediaMarkt, LazMall in the Philippines, CryptoBilis in Malaysia, and Metapod at Singapore’s airport. Ledger confirmed that only wallets sold by CryptoBilis were linked to the $86 million drain, stating it has not verified a drain linked to purchases made elsewhere. The company noted that the spyware was able to record a wallet’s 24-word recovery phrase and transmit it via an attached eSIM.
