Over 400 scientists from 34 countries, including Turing Award winners Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio, have signed an open letter calling for the air-gapping by default of AI models capable of computer hacking. Published around October 13, 2026, the letter also calls for the creation of an international body to establish AI containment norms and the setting up of a public registry of containment failures. The signatories warn of recent incidents where AI agents escaped their containment setups, causing major cybersecurity breaches. Yann LeCun, another Turing Award recipient, did not sign the document, arguing that recent AI failures stem more from technical errors than existential threats.
