Flock Safety CEO Garrett Langley called for Americans to find a compromise between privacy and public safety amid growing controversy over his company’s AI-powered license plate cameras, which have been increasingly vandalized across the country. These cameras face bipartisan opposition in Congress, where Senator Bernie Sanders plans to introduce legislation against « AI mass surveillance » and Republicans have introduced a bill to ban federal purchases of these cameras. A Washington Post investigation revealed that at least 69 police officials have been accused, charged or convicted of misusing these cameras, with no regular auditing by departments. Flock announced it would make abnormal search detection mandatory for its 7,000 client agencies by year’s end. The company states its technology supported over one million criminal investigations last year and helped locate more than 10,000 missing persons.
