The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) approved on October 20, 2026 the country’s first retail Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF). Classified as an other fund for alternative investments, the fund is exempted from standard risk-diversification rules, an exception justified by Bitcoin’s established track record and significant trading volumes. The approval comes with strict custody requirements aligned with FINMA guidance published on January 12, 2026, along with mandatory warnings about volatility and potential losses. This marks a shift from 2021, when FINMA approved a crypto fund restricted to qualified investors and diversified across multiple digital assets.
