Finland investigates Google over 300 hectares of forest cleared for data center

Finnish authorities are investigating Tuike Finland Oy, a Google-owned project company, over potential violations of environmental regulations during the clearing of more than 300 hectares of forest in Muhos, northern Finland, for data center developments. This clearing exceeds Finland’s legal threshold of 200 hectares, which requires an environmental impact assessment. In September 2026, Google announced a 13 billion euro investment in data centers in Finland, having purchased 1,400 hectares in Muhos and Kajaani from state forestry agency Metsähallitus for 27 million euros in 2024. If authorities determine that the clearing should have waited for the assessment to be completed, consequences could range from project delays to financial penalties.
